Zanzibar is a destination you can visit year-round — but choosing the right time makes a huge difference to your experience. Whether you want perfect beach weather, the best diving conditions, or to combine your trip with a Tanzania safari, this guide tells you exactly when to come.
The Two Main Seasons in Zanzibar
Zanzibar has two rainy seasons and two dry seasons each year.
The Long Rains (Masika) — March to May This is the wettest period. Heavy rainfall can last for hours each day, seas become rough, and some tours may be cancelled. Prices are lower and the island is quieter. If you do not mind occasional rain and want fewer tourists, this can work — but it is not ideal for a beach holiday.
The Short Rains (Vuli) — November to December Shorter and less intense than the long rains. Rain usually comes in short afternoon showers rather than all day. Many tourists still visit during this period successfully.
The Dry Seasons — June to October and January to February These are the best times to visit Zanzibar. Clear skies, calm seas, warm temperatures and perfect conditions for snorkeling, diving and beach relaxation.
Month by Month Breakdown
January — February Excellent. Hot and dry with temperatures around 30°C. The sea is calm and visibility for snorkeling is superb. January is one of the best months for seeing dolphins at Kizimkazi. Not too crowded compared to peak season.
March — May The long rainy season. Not recommended for a pure beach holiday. Safari Blue and boat tours are often cancelled due to rough seas. However prices are at their lowest and you will have beaches almost to yourself.
June — July The start of peak season. Weather becomes drier and cooler — around 25-27°C. Perfect for all water activities. June and July are excellent for Safari Blue as the seas are calm and marine life is abundant.
August — October The absolute best time to visit Zanzibar. Consistently dry, clear skies and perfect temperatures. The sea is at its calmest making it ideal for Mnemba Island snorkeling, Prison Island, Safari Blue and all boat tours. This is also the peak of the Great Migration in the Serengeti — perfect for combining Zanzibar with a Tanzania safari.
November — December The short rains bring occasional afternoon showers but mornings are usually clear. Good for visiting if you are flexible. December picks up with European holiday tourists and prices rise again.
Best Time for Specific Activities
Snorkeling and Diving June to October is ideal. Water visibility is at its best and seas are calmest. Mnemba Island is world-class for snorkeling during this period.
Safari Blue June to October. This full-day boat excursion requires calm seas. The experience is completely different and far superior when the weather is dry and the water is clear.
Dolphin Tour at Kizimkazi January to February and June to October. Dolphins are resident year-round but sightings are most reliable during calm sea conditions.
Stone Town Stone Town can be visited any time of year as it is a land-based experience. However exploring the narrow streets is much more comfortable in the dry season when humidity is lower.
Kite Surfing at Paje June to October is peak kite surfing season due to consistent southeast trade winds. January to February also has good winds. Paje is one of the best kite surfing destinations in the world during these months.
Combining Zanzibar with Kilimanjaro January to March and June to October are the best trekking seasons on Kilimanjaro. Combine a Kilimanjaro trek with a Zanzibar beach holiday — fly between the two for the ultimate Tanzania experience.
Our Honest Recommendation
If you can only visit once and want the best possible experience — come between June and October. You will get perfect beach weather, calm seas for all boat tours, excellent snorkeling visibility and the opportunity to combine with a Tanzania safari.
January and February are our second recommendation — hot, dry and beautiful with fewer tourists than peak season.
Whatever time you visit, Zanzibar will surprise you. The island has a magic that works in any season.
