Climbing Kilimanjaro is one of the greatest adventures on Earth. At 5,895 metres, Uhuru Peak is the highest point in Africa and reaching it is an achievement that stays with you for life. But before you lace up your boots, you need to make one crucial decision — which route to take.
The Three Classic Routes at a Glance
Marangu: 5 Days | Moderate | 65% success | From $1,500 | Hut accommodation Machame: 7 Days | Challenging | 85% success | From $1,900 | Camping Lemosho: 8 Days | Moderate-Challenging | 95% success | From $2,200 | Camping
The Marangu Route — The Classic Choice
The Marangu Route is the oldest and most established path up Kilimanjaro. Known as the Coca-Cola Route, it is the only route with permanent sleeping huts — meaning you sleep in a bed rather than a tent. This makes it the most comfortable and most affordable option.
The honest truth about Marangu: It is shorter — just 5 days — and that is both its appeal and its weakness. Less time on the mountain means less time for your body to acclimatise to the altitude. This is why the success rate is lower than other routes.
Choose Marangu if you have limited time, a tighter budget, or prefer sleeping in a bed rather than a tent.
The Machame Route — The Most Popular Route
The Machame Route is the most popular camping route on Kilimanjaro. It takes you through some of the mountain's most dramatic scenery including the famous Barranco Wall — a rocky scramble that is a thrilling highlight of the trek.
The 7-day itinerary follows the climb high sleep low principle which gives your body significantly more time to adjust to altitude. The result is an 85% summit success rate — much higher than Marangu.
Choose Machame if you are reasonably fit, want a well-established route, and have 7 days available. This is the route we recommend most often.
The Lemosho Route — The Best Success Rate
The Lemosho Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the remote western side — an area with far fewer trekkers and some of the most pristine wilderness on the mountain. With 8 days and the longest approach, Lemosho gives your body maximum acclimatisation time.
The result is a 95% summit success rate — the highest of any route on Kilimanjaro. You also get to experience the Shira Plateau — one of the most beautiful high altitude landscapes in Africa.
Choose Lemosho if this is your first high altitude trek, you want the highest success rate, or you want the most scenic and least crowded experience.
Altitude Sickness — The Most Important Factor
Regardless of which route you choose, altitude sickness is the main reason people do not reach the summit. It affects people randomly — fitness, age and experience make little difference. The only reliable protection is time — spending more days on the mountain.
This is why we recommend Machame or Lemosho over Marangu for most trekkers. The extra days dramatically increase your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak.
Our Honest Recommendation
For most trekkers we recommend the Machame Route. It offers the best balance of success rate, scenery, cost and duration.
If your summit success matters above everything else and you have 8 days — choose Lemosho.
If you have limited time or budget — Marangu is a solid option but go in with realistic expectations about the lower success rate.
Whatever route you choose, climbing Kilimanjaro will be one of the most extraordinary experiences of your life.
