On the southern tip of Zanzibar Island, where the Indian Ocean channels between the island and the reef create warm nutrient-rich waters, resident pods of wild dolphins have made their permanent home. Kizimkazi has been famous for dolphin encounters for decades and swimming alongside these extraordinary animals in their natural habitat remains one of Zanzibar's most magical experiences.

The Dolphins of Kizimkazi

Two species of dolphin are resident in Kizimkazi's waters year-round.

Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins The larger of the two species. They live in smaller pods and are typically found further offshore. Bottlenose dolphins are the most iconic dolphin species — playful, curious and willing to interact with boats and swimmers.

Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins Smaller and more shy than bottlenose dolphins, humpback dolphins prefer the shallower inshore waters and mangrove channels around Kizimkazi. They are beautiful — pale grey to pink in colour with a distinctive hump below the dorsal fin.

Both species are resident meaning they are present year-round rather than migratory. This makes Kizimkazi one of the most reliable dolphin destinations in East Africa.

What the Dolphin Tour Involves

The tour departs from Kizimkazi village by traditional fishing boat. Your captain and guide will navigate to where the dolphins were last seen — local fishermen have decades of knowledge about the dolphins' movements and feeding patterns.

When a pod is located the boat approaches carefully. If the dolphins are relaxed and moving slowly you will have the opportunity to slip quietly into the water and snorkel alongside them.

The experience of being in open ocean water with wild dolphins moving around you — sometimes within touching distance, sometimes far below — is genuinely extraordinary. Nothing can fully prepare you for it.

Responsible Dolphin Swimming

It is important to approach dolphin tourism ethically. The dolphins of Kizimkazi have suffered from irresponsible tourism in the past — boats chasing them aggressively, swimmers grabbing at them, tours during their resting hours.

We follow strict guidelines for dolphin interaction. We never chase or herd dolphins. We only enter the water when dolphins are relaxed and moving calmly. We maintain respectful distance and never touch dolphins. We limit time in the water with any single pod to prevent stress.

Choosing a responsible operator matters enormously for the long-term health of these dolphin populations.

Kizimkazi Village

Beyond the dolphins, Kizimkazi village is historically significant as the site of one of the oldest mosques in East Africa — the Shirazi Mosque dating to the 12th century. The inscriptions inside are among the oldest surviving examples of Swahili script. A visit to the mosque is a wonderful complement to the dolphin tour.

Best Time for the Dolphin Tour

Dolphins are resident year-round in Kizimkazi but the best conditions for both dolphin sightings and snorkeling are during the dry season from June to October and January to February when seas are calmest and visibility is best.

Early morning departures are generally preferred — the dolphins are most active in the morning and sea conditions are typically calmer before the afternoon breeze.

Dolphin Sightings Are Wildlife

It is important to understand that dolphin sightings are wildlife encounters — not guaranteed performances. On the vast majority of tours dolphins are seen. Occasionally — particularly during rough sea conditions or unusual weather — they may not be found. This is part of what makes a genuine wildlife encounter so special.

We offer the dolphin tour as a standalone experience or combined with a Jozani Forest visit and a stop at Kizimkazi mosque for a comprehensive south Zanzibar day.
