Is Zanzibar safe? It is one of the most common questions we receive from tourists planning their trip. The short answer is yes β€” Zanzibar is one of the safest tourist destinations in East Africa and the vast majority of visitors have a completely trouble-free experience.

But like any destination, it helps to understand the context and use common sense. Here is our honest guide from people who live and work here.

The Overall Safety Picture

Zanzibar receives hundreds of thousands of tourists every year from Europe, North America and around the world. Serious incidents involving tourists are rare. The island has a long history of peaceful coexistence between communities and tourism is an important part of the local economy β€” local people benefit from tourists being safe and happy.

The Tanzanian government takes tourism safety seriously and there is a visible police presence in tourist areas.

Petty Theft and Pickpocketing

The most common issue tourists face in Zanzibar is petty theft β€” pickpocketing and bag snatching, particularly in Stone Town and on popular beaches. This is manageable with simple precautions.

Do not carry more cash than you need for the day. Leave your passport and extra cards in your hotel safe. Use a concealed money belt under your clothing in crowded areas. Do not leave valuables unattended on the beach. Be aware of your surroundings in Stone Town at night β€” stick to busier streets and avoid shortcuts through dark alleys after dark.

Beach Safety

Some beaches β€” particularly those near Stone Town β€” can have persistent beach vendors and unofficial guides offering services. A firm but polite no asante (no thank you) is usually sufficient. Engage with people you have chosen to engage with rather than feeling obligated to respond to every approach.

The east coast beaches around Paje, Jambiani and Kendwa are generally much more relaxed and vendor activity is minimal.

Swimming Safety

Zanzibar's east coast has a coral reef and a shallow lagoon system. The currents outside the reef can be strong β€” always swim within the lagoon area and pay attention to local advice about conditions. Rip currents are uncommon within the lagoon but always exercise caution in unfamiliar water.

Health and Medical Safety

Malaria is present in Zanzibar. Take antimalarial medication as prescribed by your doctor before travelling and use insect repellent β€” particularly at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

Drink bottled water and avoid tap water, ice in drinks from street vendors and raw salads washed in tap water if you have a sensitive stomach. Most restaurants catering to tourists are careful about food hygiene but exercising caution is sensible.

Cultural Respect and Safety

Zanzibar is a predominantly Muslim island. Dressing modestly away from the beach, behaving respectfully near mosques and during prayer times, and showing genuine respect for local customs significantly contributes to a positive and safe experience.

Photographing local people without asking permission first can cause offence β€” always ask first. Many people are happy to be photographed but asking shows respect.

Travelling Solo and as a Woman

Many solo travellers β€” including solo women β€” visit Zanzibar without any issues. The east coast beach areas are particularly relaxed and well established for independent tourism.

Exercise the same common sense you would in any unfamiliar destination. Avoid walking alone on isolated beaches at night. Arrange transport with reputable providers. Trust your instincts.

Using Reputable Tour Operators

One of the most effective ways to ensure a safe and enjoyable Zanzibar experience is booking tours with reputable local operators who know the island and take responsibility for your safety and experience.
