On Zanzibar's southeast coast, where the Indian Ocean meets a vast shallow lagoon enclosed by a coral reef, lies Paje Beach — one of the most beautiful and vibrant beach destinations in Africa. Internationally famous for kite surfing, Paje is also a base for exploring the best of Zanzibar's east coast and a wonderful destination in its own right.

Why Paje is Famous for Kite Surfing

Three factors combine to make Paje one of the world's finest kite surfing destinations.

Consistent Trade Winds The southeast trade winds blow reliably across Paje from June to October — the peak kite surfing season. Wind speeds are consistent at 15-25 knots, ideal for both beginners and experienced kiters. January to March also offers good wind conditions.

The Shallow Lagoon At low tide, the coral reef exposes a vast shallow lagoon — in places only knee deep for hundreds of metres. This creates the perfect learning environment for beginners. Falling in the shallow flat water is far less intimidating than falling in the open ocean.

The Space Paje has a long wide beach with consistent wind direction. There is enough space for multiple kiters to fly simultaneously without risk of collision.

Learning to Kite Surf at Paje

Paje has several reputable kite surfing schools with certified instructors. A beginner course typically takes 8-12 hours of instruction spread over 3-4 days. By the end most students can ride independently in light winds.

We offer kite surfing lessons at Paje as part of our tour programme. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced kiter looking to improve, our certified instructors will get you on the water safely.

Paje Beyond Kite Surfing

Paje is much more than a kite surfing destination. The beach is beautiful at any time — the shallow turquoise lagoon, the white sand and the dramatic low tide seascape make it one of the most photogenic stretches of coastline in East Africa.

Snorkeling The coral reef that creates the lagoon is alive with marine life. Snorkeling at the reef edge at high tide reveals tropical fish, sea turtles and vibrant coral formations.

Seaweed Farming The distinctive wooden frames visible in the lagoon at low tide are seaweed farms — a major industry for Paje village women. Walking out to the farms at low tide and learning about seaweed cultivation is a genuine local experience.

Paje Village Behind the beach lies the authentic fishing village of Paje — a world away from the beach bars and kite surfing schools. Walk through the village streets, visit the market, watch dhow boats being repaired and experience genuine Zanzibari coastal life.

Day Trips from Paje Paje is perfectly located for exploring the east coast. Jambiani village and Kuza Cave are 15 minutes south. The Blue Lagoon at Michamvi is 30 minutes north. Kizimkazi for dolphin swimming is 45 minutes south. Jozani Forest for red colobus monkeys is 30 minutes away.
