Both Zanzibar and the Maldives sit in the warm Indian Ocean with white sand beaches, turquoise water and world-class snorkeling. But they are very different destinations offering very different experiences. Here is our honest guide to help you choose.

The Beaches

Both destinations have exceptional beaches. The Maldives is famous for its overwater bungalows and private island resorts where your villa sits directly above a lagoon. The beaches are immaculate and the water is extraordinary.

Zanzibar's beaches — particularly the east coast at Paje, Jambiani and Bwejuu — are among the most beautiful in the world. Wide stretches of powder white sand, shallow turquoise lagoons and dramatic low tide seascapes. The beaches are natural and undeveloped compared to the Maldives.

Winner for beaches: Draw — both are world class in different ways.

Culture and History

This is where Zanzibar wins decisively. Zanzibar has over a thousand years of fascinating history — the spice trade, the Sultans of Oman, the slave trade, colonial architecture and a unique blend of African, Arab, Indian and European culture. Stone Town alone is worth the trip.

The Maldives has beautiful culture but limited historical sites to visit. Most resorts are on private islands away from local life.

Winner for culture: Zanzibar — no contest.

Activities

Zanzibar offers an extraordinary range of activities beyond the beach. Safari Blue full-day ocean tour, Prison Island giant tortoises, Jozani Forest red colobus monkeys, Spice Tour, Stone Town, kite surfing at Paje, dolphin swimming at Kizimkazi and the option to combine with a Tanzania safari or Kilimanjaro trek.

The Maldives focuses primarily on water sports, diving and relaxation. It is exceptional for scuba diving and snorkeling but limited in land-based experiences.

Winner for activities: Zanzibar — far more variety.

Combining with a Safari

This is Zanzibar's unique advantage. No other beach destination in the world allows you to combine a beach holiday with witnessing the Great Migration in the Serengeti or climbing Kilimanjaro. Flying from Zanzibar directly to a Serengeti bush camp is one of the great travel experiences on Earth.

Winner for safari combination: Zanzibar — unique.

Cost

The Maldives is one of the most expensive destinations in the world. A week in a mid-range overwater bungalow typically costs $3,000 to $8,000 per person including flights.

Zanzibar offers exceptional value. A beautiful boutique hotel, meals and tours can be done for $100 to $200 per day. Budget options are also widely available.

Winner for value: Zanzibar — significantly more affordable.

Who Should Choose the Maldives

Choose the Maldives if you want the most luxurious possible beach resort experience, you are travelling as a couple on honeymoon and privacy is important, or budget is not a concern and the overwater bungalow experience is a dream.

Who Should Choose Zanzibar

Choose Zanzibar if you want extraordinary beaches combined with genuine culture and history, you want to combine your beach holiday with a Tanzania safari or Kilimanjaro trek, you want more activities and variety beyond the beach, or you want exceptional value for money.

For most travellers — especially those visiting East Africa for the first time — Zanzibar is the better choice. It offers more, costs less and provides a richer and more varied experience.
