Just 5.6 km northwest of Stone Town lies Changuu Island, better known as Prison Island. Originally built as a prison in the late 19th century (though it never housed inmates), it's now home to a sanctuary for giant Aldabra tortoises — some over 100 years old. Crystal clear water surrounds the island, perfect for a quick snorkel.
